Four Fours!

Today we tried to make all fo the numbers from 1-20 using four (no more, no less) fours.  We were allowed to use all four operations, as well as parentheses, exponents and combining the fours to make 44.  A wide variety of solutions were found, but I have included some that I found on the "Four Fours" Wikipedia page.  I have added some other solutions, in grey, since we used exponents and didn't use decimals, square roots (√) or factorials (!).

Here is a set of four fours solutions for the numbers 0 through 20, using typical rules. Some alternate solutions are listed here, although there are actually many more correct solutions

0 = 44 − 44 = 4 − 4 + 4 − 4 = 4 + 4 - 4 - 4

1 = 44 ÷ 44 = 4 ÷ 4 + 4 − 4 = (44 − 44)!

2 = 4 ÷ 4 + 4 ÷ 4

3 = (4 + 4 + 4) ÷ 4

4 = 4 ×(4 − 4) + 4

5 = (4 × 4 + 4) ÷ 4

6 = 4 × 4 + 4 - 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 ÷ 4

7 = 44 ÷ 4 − 4 = 4 + 4 − (4 ÷ 4)

8 = 4 + 4.4 − .4 = 4 + 4 + 4 − 4

9 = 4 + 4 + 4 ÷ 4

10 = (44 − 4) / 4 = 44 ÷ 4.4 = 4 + √4 + √4 + √4

11 = 4 ÷ .4 + 4 ÷ 4 = 4^2 - (4 + 4 / 4)

12 = (44 + 4) ÷ 4 = 4^2 - 4 + 4 - 4

13 = 4! − 44 ÷ 4= (4 − .4) ÷ .4 + 4 = 4^2 - 4 -4 / 4

14 = 4 × (4 − .4) − .4 = 4 ÷ .4 + √4 + √4 = 4^2 - (4 + 4) /4

15 = 44 ÷ 4 + 4 = 4 × 4 − 4 ÷ 4

16 = .4 × (44 − 4) = 4 × 4 × 4 ÷ 4 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = √4 × √4 × √4 × √4

17 = 4 × 4 + 4 ÷ 4

18 = 44 × .4 + .4 = 4 × 4 + 4 ÷ √4 = 4^2 + (4 + 4) / 4

19 = 4! − 4 − (4 ÷ 4)  = 4^2 + 4 - 4 / 4

20 = 4 × (4 ÷ 4 + 4)

PEMDAS

Today we started working with Order of Operations (OoO as I like to call it).

The Order is:

Parentheses- Do everything inside the parentheses first.  Follow the OoO inside the parentheses.

Exponents- Simplify (solve) the exponents. Be careful to ensure you do them properly.

Multiplication/Division- Working from left to right (like a normal sentence) complete the division and multiplication problems as you see them.

Addition/Subtraction- Working from left to right (like a normal sentence) complete the subtraction and addition problems as you see them.

Be sure to rewrite the problem after each step to ensure that you don't forget any parts.

Tonight's homework is Worksheet 2-8.  I will let you know in class which problems to do!  (There won't be many!)

Some OoO help below...  :)

From Mrs. Glosser's Math Activities:  Order of Operations

Tutorial and practice problems from Amby's Math Resources:  Tutorial and a "Pre-test"

Fun Brain fill in the blank problems:  Games

Interactive activitiy where you just click on the operations (no calculations): click activity  (make the window bigger to play!)

AWESOME game where you can make your own image play (mine below):  Millionaire game

Video help:

A song to help you remember the order:

There are TONS of PEMDAS videos online.  I will report tonight or tomorrow with some of the best ones!

Have a great night and don't forget to wear Blue and Green tomorrow for Earth Day!

Area and Perimeter game/info site!

Just saw this and thought that you all might like it and learn from it!  Check it out!  The level 3 questions should be good for you to practice with, but check out the lower levels first.  :)

Wring out Wednesday!

The rain has stopped!!!!  I have heard that many of you have had complications at your houses due to the yucky rain, and I hope that things get better soon!  Flooded basements and new ponds in yards are not fun!  Good Luck!

We worked on perimeter in class today, especially perimeters that included semi circles...  Everyone did a really nice job in class and virtually everyone finished during class.  If you didn't, tonight's homework is to complete the worksheet from class.  Tomorrow you will receive the one of the two study guides for next Thursday's test.

Thanks for your hard work today!  See you tomorrow!
