Metric conversions

We started completing conversions in the metric system today.  Tonight's homework is to begin working independently on converting, but since it is new, it might be a little bit confusing.  Do your best, but know that we will continue to review tomorrow.

We used the phrase, "King Henry Died by drinking chocolate milk" to help us put the various prefixes in order.  Use that to help you complete your work tonight.

Homework:

Some problems completed:

A video to help you.  They use a different sentence and use steps, but the math is the same.

If you still feel stuck, try your best tonight and come with questions for when we review tomorrow.

Today we worked on converting real life items in the metric system. No homework tonight, but we will have a graded class assignment on Friday! Have a good night!

Converting in the Metric System

So as we learned last night and discussed today, pretty much everyone in the world uses the Metric System. Tonight we will practice working with the Metric System and converting within.

Metric System Blog Homework!

Hey everyone! If you are reading this, you have just started tonight's online homework! Your homework for tonight is to be on the blog and complete the tasks outlined in this post.

We're starting to work on the Metric System in class. Please follow the directions below to be prepared for class tomorrow!

Please watch this video from Bill Nye:

Google image search: "Metric System"  Please write down what you learn from the images on paper (quick version, 30 words or less) or print out an image (just one) that you think is most helpful. If you want to share it on instagram, please hashtag it #misskmetric

Research: How many countries DON'T use the Metric System? Bonus: What are they?

Think about it:  What are the benefits of the Metric System?

Be ready to talk about it: Do you think we should switch to the Metric System? Why or why not?

Size Comparison: Find approximate sizes of the base units in the Metric System. About how long is a meter? How heavy is a gram? How much is a liter?

Optional, Metric system film from 1975 (this will help you with the questions above):

From class today (nothing to do with this this evening!)

I'll be out tomorrow. :(

Thanks for all of your diligent work in class today!  Everyone seemed to do a good job on the worksheet and I was glad that you were able to get some work done during class.  As you know, tonight's homework is the (2nd) customary worksheet.  Work carefully and do your proportions on a separate sheet of paper.

Tomorrow you will begin working on metric system conversions.  Please remind yourself of the technique with the video below:

The sub should pass out multiple note sheets during class and your hw assignment will even have examples on the back.  I shortened the hw to just 16 problems (and did one for you) so that it won't be too difficult without me there.  I will provide you with a challenge math sheet if you finish early, but if you want to get caught up on your reading for LA or have other work to do, you can use remaining time as a study hall as long as you are quiet and appropriate during the class period.  I'll miss you guys tomorrow and I promise to think about what you guys are doing when I am feeling well enough.  Otherwise, it's sleep city for Miss K!

Be good ladies and gentlemen!  I hope to hear good things when I get back!  I'm planning on doing a short blog sometime tomorrow, so be on the lookout for it!
