Dividing Fractions

Today we began dividing fractions.  If you felt good about multiplying fractions, you should have no trouble dividing as long as you remember to

Multiplying Fractions

As difficult as Adding and Subtracting Fractions are, Multiplying is just as EASY!!!

The steps for multiplying are:

The first step is to make everything a fraction.  If you have a whole number, convert it to an improper fraction by putting it over one.  If you have a mixed number, swirl around by multiplying the denominator by the whole number and adding the numerator to make the NEW numerator.  examples:

The next step is to cross cancel if you can.  Look for common factors on a diagonal to simplify BEFORE you multiply.  The examples below are problems after they have been cross cancelled, but before we multiply. 

After cross cancelling, multiply the numerators for a new numerator, multiply denominators for a new denominator.  The first examples are basic problems without cross cancelling, the second set include cross cancelling.

After getting your answer, make sure that you answer is in lowest terms.  If you cross cancelled, you should be there already, or at least pretty close to the final answer.  Some more examples from class:

This problem has two numbers that needed to be converted to fractions before we multiplied.  

 This examples includes one value that needed to be made improper and cross cancelling.

This problem wasn't too bad, but at the end, we needed to convert the improper fraction back into a mixed number.  We divided the numerator by the denominator to find the equivalent mixed number.

Starting to Review for our Quiz on Thursday

Today we began to review for our quiz on Thursday.

After correcting last night's probability homework, we used the people in our class to determine probability:

Then we had a competition to see who could determine the probability of picking certain items from our junk boxes.  You needed to simplify the fractions in order to get the answers correct!  Congratulations to the winners!

We practiced using our divisibility rules in a Venn diagram and circling which numbers worked:

We didn't review percentages in class today, but that will also be on the quiz.  You will spend some more time practicing that on Tuesday!

I will not be in school on Tuesday because I will be celebrating the Second day of Rosh Hashanah.  If you are celebrating too, I wish you a sweet New Year.  The substitute on Tuesday will have review sheets to help you prepare for the quiz, and you can work on the study guide as well.

The Study Guide is due on Wednesday.  The quiz is on Thursday.

RATIO!

Soooo...  Since I had to leave early yesterday for a doctor's appointment, I totally forgot to blog!!!!  Whoops!  We completed our benchmark assessment in class yesterday, so there wasn't much to tell anyway!  You are done with the fall benchmark!  Wahoo!!!!

Today, however, we were able to begin working on ratios.

Ratios are where you compare two different values.  They can be written as a Fraction (in lowest terms), using the word "to", or with a colon (:) as you can see above.

You received a note sheet with similar problems on it.  If you feel like you need more practice, you should try to work on those problems.  :)

Tonight's homework is Worksheet 10-1, all problems.  That is the side with the shapes on top and the animals in the middle of the page.  Please work carefully, read the directions for each section (don't miss the directions for #'s 5-8!!!), and simplify your answers into lowest terms if you can.

White class:  I couldn't find the video that used to be attached to the lesson, so I wasn't able to include it in my post.  Everyone else:  Don't worry about it, their class didn't see it either!  :)
