Comparing and Ordering decimal values!

Welcome back!  I'm glad to hear that pretty much everyone has their power back and seems to be recovering from the storm.  We started working on our school work again today and it seems like everyone really understood the homework.  Tonight you should do two things:

1) If you didn't get your math test signed and/or didn't correct the problems that were wrong, you should get it signed and correct anything that was wrong.  I will collect this on Wednesday, November 7th.

2) You should complete worksheet 3-3 for homework tonight.  I believe that most of you got quite a bit done in class, so this shouldn't be too difficult.

Please remember that there is no school tomorrow due to the election!  Please encourage your parents to vote and ask them about the voting process, why they vote the way they do, and whatever questions you might have about the election.  You can still learn when there is no school!  I can't wait to vote tomorrow!  This is the 4th Presidential Election that I get to participate in!

Today we talked about comparing and ordering decimal values.

Tonight's homework:

You can also play a game to practice this topic by clicking here or on the picture below.  Try each level!

If you are working on your math test and don't know how to solve a problem, please use the information on the blog to help you!!!!  It's there for a reason!!!

Cut the Rope!

Today, after taking some pre-tests, we played a game, Cut the Rope.  The reason we played this game is because it isn't easy and you can get frustrated with the game quite quickly.  My goal is that you keep trying even when things get difficult or you aren't immediately successful!  Take your time to do you best work, don't settle for good enough, and challenge yourself to keep going even when it seems like you can't do it.  You'd be amazed by what you can do when you keep trying.

Do you want to challenge yourself to keep trying, think differently, persevere?  Try the Cut the Rope game online here or by clicking on the image below.  Let me know what level you get to in the comments!

Tomorrow's Quiz

What you need to know:

Lines:

Line Segment:  A line segment is a part of a line with two endpoints.  It's part of a line.

Ray:  A ray has a starting point, but then continues forever.  Think of a flashlight beam.

Line:  A line continues forever in both directions.  It has no starting or ending point.

Relationships:

Intersecting:  Lines that cross.

Perpendicular:  Lines that meet at a 90 degree angle.  A right angle is perpendicular.

Parallel:  Two lines that remain the same distance apart at all times and never cross.

Angles:

Acute Angle:  A small angle measuring less than 90 degrees.

Right Angle:  An angle measuring 90 degrees.

Obtuse Angle:  A wide angle measuring more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees.

Straight Angle:  An angle measuring 180 degrees.

Estimating Angles:  Give a general estimate of an angle's measure.  These will be multiple choice on the quiz.

Complementary Angles: Complementary Angles add up to 90 degrees.  Remember, "It's always RIGHT to give a Compliment!"

Supplementary Angles:  Supplementary Angles add up to 180 degrees.  Remember, "Sssssssssssupplemenary is Sssssssssssstraight!"

Coordinate Planes:  Coordinates are written with the X value first and the Y value second.  (X,Y)  Move left to right first and up and down second.

Games to help you practice:

Estimating angles:

Point the telescope at a planet.

Fruit picker, a bit more challenging.

Ninja Angles  This one kicks butt.  Literally!!!

Banana Hunt

Now chuck those bananas!

More angle games to check out.

Coordinate Planes:

Drive around the desert to find buried treasure.

Identify points on the graph.

Ride your bike around a neighborhood.

More coordinate plane games to help you practice.

The other topics are easier to do on your own.  For example identifying lines, angles and relationships should be pretty straightforward and finding complements and supplements are just about subtracting.  go over your old notes and previous blog posts to help you!

I hope that these help you study by practicing!!!!

Good Luck tomorrow!  I will see you on Wednesday!

Coordinate Plane

Want to learn how to play Battleship?  Go to the game site here to practice.  It doesn't use the coordinate plane, but will help you learn how to play the game.

Here are some notes from class to remind you about coordinate planes.

If you still need to finish setting up your Battleship Board, use the image below to help guide you.

Have a great weekend and remember to study for the quiz on Tuesday.  It will be on lines, relationships, angles, complementary angles, supplementary angles and graphing on coordinate planes.

Word problem review today!

Great job on the word problems today in class!  As I mentioned, you should use that worksheet to help you prepare for the test.  The word problems on the test will be similar to the ones that you saw today.

As you worked on the study guide, I noticed that some people were having some difficulty with estimation.  To help, please review below and/or visit my original post on estimation.

Adding and Subtracting:  Estimate by round each number to the highest COMMON place value.  Basically round both numbers to the biggest place value that they BOTH have.

ex:  17.92 + 182.034
since both numbers have a digit in the tens place (underlined), we would round to the tens.

20 + 180 = 200

Multiplying:  Estimate by rounding EACH number to its OWN highest place value.  Basically, use as many zeros as possible!

ex:  5.67 x 41.08376
round the first number to the ones place and the second number to the tens place

6 x 40 = 240

Dividing:  Estimate by using compatible numbers.  Round the divisor first and then search for a compatible number for the dividend.

ex:  41.03 / 7.15
round the 7.15 to 7 and then think about multiples of 7.  Since 42 is a multiple of 7 and is reasonably close to 41.03, we round it to 42.

42 / 7 = 6

I'd also encourage you to practice rounding decimal values.  Check out this game to practice.  Or this one!

I'll put more on the blog tomorrow, but spend some time with these topics tonight.

Tonight's homework is to review for the test.  The study guide (click link to view and print a Google doc of the study guide) is due Thursday.  I will also provide you with an optional, additional study guide on Thursday which you can complete and check answers online.

Thanks for your hard work today!  Keep it up and study hard!

LCM

Today we began working on LCM...

Here are some reminder slides from today's lesson:

Try the game from class!

Tonight's homework is the LCM worksheet.  Remember that you don't have to do the notes side and to read the directions along the side of the paper.  You MUST do #1-8 and 53 and 54.  Choose at least 10 problems on numbers 9-52.

Have a great night!

Adding and Subtracting MIXED numbers

Hello kiddos!

Today we started adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  The videos I posted yesterday can be a big help in reminding you how to complete these types of problems.  The notes on the back sides of the two homework papers should be helpful as well.

As you know, tonight's assignment is to complete 8 problems on each homework paper, but I want to give you a hint to help you get on the 100% Club bulletin board...  If you do more than eight problems on tonight's homework, you can still get on the board as long as you have at least eight problems correct on the paper.  Remember that each paper is eligible for the 100% club, so you could have TWO papers on the board tomorrow!  I was so excited that we started on the second layer already!  (Thanks White class for putting us over!)

So subtracting with mixed numbers can get a little tricky, so I have found a few websites to help you improve your skills.  Feel free to play around with some of these to help you!

Good luck tonight!

-Miss K  :)

AAA Math Game  This game allows you to work with the numbers and solve a few subtraction problems.  Change the problems while you work by clicking in the boxes and typing in the new values.

Interactive Practice  This really cool site will show you with animation how to change the problems.  Then it let's you do a few by dragging the correct numbers into the problem.  Good practice and very clear demonstrations.

Cliffs Notes  Notes to help you understand the process.  Not very interactive, but good to help you review.  Very similar to the notes on the back of your homework.

Jamit Game  A game using subtraction of mixed numbers.  A little challenging.  Make sure that you have pencil and paper nearby to do your work.  (I needed it!)

Good Luck!!!
