Pixel art for Monday

Okay...  We are going to get a little creative next week and play with pixel art!

Your homework is to come with a large, square (hopefully color) picture on Monday if you can!  Feel free to email the picture to me if you would prefer and I can print it out for you.  Instagram pictures are ideal for pixelating because they are already square and usually have bright, simple shapes.  If you want to use an instagram picture, you can hashtag it #misskpixelart and I will be able to access it!

If you can't get a picture printed, that is fine!  You can email me or tag the picture on instagram or just rip a picture out of the comics of your Sunday paper or whatever you can find.  If you can't make it happen one of those way, that's okay too!  I will have extra images for you!

Here are two pictures of my dog that I was able to pixelate digitally.

As you can see, when we pixelate, we can break an image up into boxes (sometimes even other shapes) and represent the image in a different manner.  Old video games used to look very pixelated.  See Mario and the Duck Hunt duck below.

I spent many an afternoon playing this game!

If you have a picture that you would like to digitally pixelate like I did to my dog above, you can go to LunaPic and pixelate it here!  If you have trouble getting to the "Pixelate" section, choose it from the "adjust" menu items.  It's the 6th one down.

Here are some fun and funky examples of pixel art, sometimes using pixels, sometimes using interesting objects like rubik's cubes or candy!

Rubik's Cubes!

Jelly Beans!

 Legos!

 Tee shirts!

A video on making the Tee Shirt pixel art!

Try making some basic pixel art here!

Check out some really cool mosaics made from random objects HERE!

If you have any questions or if there is any confusion about what you are supposed to do, don't worry about it and we will talk about it on Monday!  If you can bring in a picture, GREAT!  If you email me a picture, GREAT!  If you can hashtag a picture, GREAT!

If you can't, NO WORRIES!!!

Enjoy your weekend and I can't wait to begin making art with you on Monday!!!

Fraction Models and Equivalent Fractions

Today we talked about Fraction Models.

We already knew what a fraction is (a number that represents a part of a whole using a numerator and denominator) but talked about what models are.

Basically each class determined that a model is a visual (something you can see) representation or example of something.  We talked about Role Models, modeling clay, building models, scale models and fashion models.

(Some Zoolander humor)

By putting them together, we realized that fraction models are visual examples of fractions.  We spent time in class today naming and creating fraction models and using them to help us find equivalent fractions.

Examples from class:

Tonight's homework is to complete your Fraction Fact Sheet.  You received a blank Fraction Fact Sheet and your fraction in class today.  Please include your fraction, five equivalent fractions, and a fraction model of your fraction (you can do more if there's room and you want to add more).  On the bottom of the page, please determine the decimal equivalent and percent equivalent and let me know if your fraction is closer to 0 or 1 (would it round down or round up?)  My example of 1/2 is below!

Get creative and have fun with this assignment!  Helpful hint:  If your fraction has an 8 or 40 for a denominator, your decimal will go to the thousandths place!!!

Solving Algebraic Problems

After correcting today's homework, which you guys KILLED by the way, we began working on some algebraic problems.  Students were placed in small groups to attempt rather difficult problems.  We will continue working on these problems and constructing our posters on Monday.  Take a look below to see how I solved my sample problem and the six problems that you worked on in class!  There's no homework, but have a great weekend and I will see you on Monday!

More OoO

Today we had out "Operation Central" play!  And we solved the big confusing math problem!

Tonight's homework is the OoO (Order of Operations) worksheet.  Most of you either finished or came really close to finishing your homework in class tonight, but here are examples from the paper...  Remember that a= 2, b=3, and c=4.

Good luck on the homework and have a nice day!
