Remind 101

Hello all!

I know that the first day of school is still a few weeks off and I'm not even sure that students know who their teachers will be, but I am so excited about this that I wanted to get it online right away!

I have signed up for "Remind 101."  By signing up for this service, you will receive text messages from me about upcoming tests and quizzes, reminders about special homework, etc.  Please sign up and encourage your parents to do the same by texting the following...

After sending your text, you will receive a confirmation about joining and a request to share your name.  Your name will only be shared with me, I won't be able  to access your phone number and I will be the only one able to send out messages via this service.  The message is send to an account set up by Remind 101, so that phone number is property of the service (so you can't reach me through that number).

I'm looking forward to communicating with all of you this way!

Remember:

A sample picture that I edited (rather crazily) in Picnik

Same picture, different editing.

This makes the picture look like a miniature...  Same pic again.

Enjoy!  Go get creative!  Send me links to your pictures and I will post them on the blog!

Graded Class Assignment Today

It went well from what I can tell!  Didn't mean to rhyme, but I do it all the time.

So anyway...  I will work on correcting your assignments today and tomorrow and I hope to post the grades by Friday.  Homework tonight is to check out the blog and hopefully leave a comment.  If you are reading this, you are already doing your homework!  Directions on how to leave a comment are below.  If you were in red class, you might have had other homework written in your planner, but it changed since the graded assignment took so long!

Leaving a Comment:

Toward the bottom of a post, you should see a clickable bit of green text that says "0 Comments" or "3 Comments" or whatever amount of comments there are.  If you click that, you will be taken to a comment page.  You type your comment in the text box.  Feel free to leave your first name and last initial in the box if you want.

example:

Below that, You have the option to "Comment As" someone.  If you want, you can use the drop down menu to  choose to post anonymously or as Name/URL.  Anonymous might be the best option, but if you do that, be sure to put your name in your comment.  Click the "Post Comment" button and you should be done!!!

example:

I hope that this helped!

And now for your viewing pleasure...  The Mini Band playing Metallica's Enter Sandman!  All of these kids are 8 years old with the exception of the drummer who is 10.  Pretty Awesome!

Welcome to my Blog!

SCHOOL FINALLY STARTED!!!!  Wahoo!

I was really looking forward to the start of school and was bummed that it was delayed because of Irene.  Though it was quite an adventure, I am glad that the storm and the power outage are a thing of the past now!

Eric Clapton- "Goodnight Irene"

^Some awesome hair in that video huh?^

So...

Welcome to the Blog!!!

I am really excited that you are here!  I plan to use the blog for posting homework, class help, photographs from class, fun videos, interesting web stuff, infographics and anything else that I find fun and worthwhile.  I plan to do my best to post every day.  If you think of something interesting that you would like to see, just let me know and I will see what I can do.  :)

Now, as you may or may not know, a blog is a "public" place.  Just like school and real life, I expect appropriate behavior, kind and intelligent words and respectful interactions.  You are able to post comments on the blog by selecting the comments link below.  If you do so, you can either post as anonymous and include your name in your comment or input your name.  Whatever you choose, be sure to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Only use your first name- If you want to include your last initial, that is fine too
  • Do not post phone numbers, addresses or any other personal information
  • Only post with your parents' permission
  • Check with me is you have any questions or concerns

You will soon receive a permission slip from me asking your parents for permission to post photographs from class.  Once those are returned, I will begin taking photos during class and posting them for you to view!

Please feel to take a look through my old posts and leave comments!  In fact, if you found this post, please let me know by leaving a short hello in the comments below along with your first name!

If you have any questions, you can contact me at my school email.

Interactive Infographics of the Internet

Check out this interactive infographic of the internet.

I LOVE infographics!  We will use them in school this year to help us review for tests and quizzes and to understand information!  Keep an eye out for interesting ones that I can post on the blog!

United States of Autocomplete

This is what the US looks like when the first autocomplete option pops up on Google for each state.  So someone types in Connecticut and the first pop-up option is Connecticut Post.  Generally sports and newspapers reign supreme!

Conference Day

Hey there everyone!

Well I attended my ATOMIC conference today and had a great time. It was fun to be in a large conference room with hundreds of other math teachers. You all might find that a little geeky, but I really enjoyed meeting new people and learning about new ways to teach some math skills. The keynote speaker, Jim Rubillo, was excellent! He spoke at the beginning of the conference to the huge group (there were about 50-60 tables with 8-10 people at each table... What is the range of people that were there?) and talked about education in math and specifically spent time talking about technology and how you are learning and growing up with more technology that I did (or most of your teachers for that matter).

One of the things that he talked about and I am studying in one of my college classes right now is how you all are learning and playing with technology on a regular basis. In fact, sometime this week I am going to survey you to learn a little bit about how much you use and like technology. Cell phones, wiis, ipods, even fb (!) all interest me. I know that you all use tech in different ways and I want to know how! I might even have a few of you help me create a podcast!!! We will probably record during lunch bunch or study halls, so let me know if you are free.

One last thing to mention about the awesome ATOMIC conference I attended today... The President of the group, a very important job, is someone that you know pretty well. Next time you see the Vice Principal with the lovely English accent, tell her that she did a wonderful job organizing and running the event!!!!

Missed you guys today! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Happy Monday!
