More Adding and Subtracting!

We continued working on adding and subtracting today!  In fact we went on a "shopping trip" in which we purchased and returned various items!  The problem was long and complicated, but 32 of you completed it with perfection and accuracy!  Congratulations on your hard work.

Tonight's homework is to complete the adding and subtracting worksheet with estimating.  Just 14 problems!  Remember that we will have a quiz next Tuesday!

Tomorrow we start multiplying with decimals!  Want to take a look at what we will do?  Watch the video below!

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

The thing that is awesome about adding and subtracting decimals is that there is really only one thing to remember...  LINE UP THE DOT!  When you set up your problem, you need to make sure that the decimals line up so that each place value matches in a column, ones with ones, tenths with tenths, etc.

Read this short tutorial if you need help or play a game from this page to help you practice!

The Rappin' Mathematician can help you to remember to line up the dot (and give it all you've got!)

Tonight's homework is to complete 20 problems on worksheet 3-6.  Of those 20 problems, two must be the word problems at the bottom of the page.  You should have made some progress on this assignment in class!

Don't forget to "plop" the decimal into the answer!  ;)

Word Problem Workout!

I was extremely impressed by the work I saw in class today as we completed the fraction word problems.   I think we really met our object of determining which operation to use in real life situations to solve fraction problems.  Thank you for your hard work and effort on this topic.

I know that we got a little bit goofy when we were talking about dividing, but you should apply the same test when you try to complete a fraction division problem...  If you are about to chop up people into pieces, you very likely have the problem set up wrong or shouldn't be dividing.  Please take a look at the problems on you paper or at the completed examples from class below to help you think about it.

We  will have a test next Friday, October 19th, 2012, so start preparing.  I will give you a study guide and practice problems on Monday, but you should be reviewing your old homework, the extra practice papers I've given out, your notes and the previous blog posts to help you prepare for this test.  There's a lot of information on it, and the sooner you get started, the better off you will be!

There is No Homework, so just have a lovely weekend and try to fit in some review/studying if you can!

Adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

Today we began working with adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  Steps and examples from class are below!

Tonight's homework is to complete ten problems on each of the worksheets assigned today, one on adding, one on subtracting.  Remember, if you do a few more problems on each page, you can increase your chances of getting a 100 to go in the 100's box!

Here are the homework papers:  (sorry about the poor quality- I took these pictures with my phone!)

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

I must say, I am pretty impressed with your skills when it comes to adding and subtracting with fractions.  Today in class, we began by watching a video about adding and subtracting fractions and then practiced in class.

Tonight's homework is Adding and Subtracting worksheet 6-2.  I have done problems 1, 10 and 11 for you in class and they are posted just below these words.  Please remember to cross off (and not do) problems 22-25.  Also, do not do the back side of this worksheet.  We are going to complete those problems another day.  Remember to find those common denominators, convert to equivalent fractions, add or subtract, and them simplify your answers!

Feel like practicing your skills in an online game?  Try these two games:  Adding or Subtracting

So you want to study for the final test of the year...

Good!  You should!  This test is manageable, but the more you prepare, the better you will do!

Want to practice a particular skill?  Go to this link and print out worksheets (and answer keys) on various topics!  Adding, subtracting, and comparing and ordering!

Want to work on word problems?  This link has worksheets with word problems.  The site asks you to sign up, but I was able to view and print the worksheets without signing up.  There's also a game on the bottom of the page!

More printable worksheets from EdHelper.com!

Examples of writing expressions and solving word problems from class:

Remember to think of little story problems in your head as you work on these types of math problems.  Examples:

9 + (-7) = ____    Story:  I have 9 dollars (the positive amount) and I owe my friend 7 dollars (the negative amount).  How much will I have left after paying her?  Since I have more than I owe, I will have a positive amount left over, $2.

-21 + (-3) = ____ Story:  I owe Miss M $21 and I owe Mrs. Phelps $3.  How much do I owe in total?  Well, I owe 21 and 3, so I owe 24 dollars, or -24.

13 - (-5) = ____  Before the story, we want to change the problem so that we add the opposite.  The problem would then look like 13 + (+5) = ____ and the story would be that I had 13 dollars in my pocket and 5 dollars in my purse, so I therefore have a total of $18.

Please review your previous assignments, use that purple sheet to practice (answers are in this post), print out extra review sheets for any topics that you want to practice, watch the videos, play the games and read the notes from this previous post.

Good Luck!  Study!  I know that you can all do a great job on this test!  Finish off the year with a bang!
