RATIO!

Soooo...  Since I had to leave early yesterday for a doctor's appointment, I totally forgot to blog!!!!  Whoops!  We completed our benchmark assessment in class yesterday, so there wasn't much to tell anyway!  You are done with the fall benchmark!  Wahoo!!!!

Today, however, we were able to begin working on ratios.

Ratios are where you compare two different values.  They can be written as a Fraction (in lowest terms), using the word "to", or with a colon (:) as you can see above.

You received a note sheet with similar problems on it.  If you feel like you need more practice, you should try to work on those problems.  :)

Here are some examples from class using Blue classes data.

Tonight's homework is Worksheet 10-1, all problems.  That is the side with the shapes on top and the animals in the middle of the page.  Please work carefully, read the directions for each section (don't miss the directions for #'s 5-8!!!), and simplify your answers into lowest terms if you can.

White class:  I couldn't find the video that used to be attached to the lesson, so I wasn't able to include it in my post.  Everyone else:  Don't worry about it, their class didn't see it either!  :)

Have a good night and good luck with our first real homework of the school year!

First Quiz Tomorrow.

Hey everyone!  As you know, we have the first quiz of the year tomorrow!  I want to make sure that you are as successful as you can be, so be sure to study this evening!!!

If you want to do a bit more practice, you can work on the problems we did in class.  They are all below in this post.

Practice prime and composite sorting...
Pick your own numbers.  You can check out my old prime and composite post here!

 Practice your divisibility rules...
Pick your own numbers and use the rules from this post to help you remember!

Practice working with fraction models...

Circle 1/5 of these soccer balls.  Or 3/8, or 1/20.
Try 5/8 of these cowboy boots, or 1/4, or 5/6.
Circle 1/3 of the ice cream cones, or 2/7.
Practice Probability...

Make up your own probability problems using the items from my junk drawer.  Combine them to make it more challenging.  Be sure to simplify!
 Practice working with ratio...

Use these items to make up ratio problems.  Again, be sure to simplify your answers.

You have your study guide as well as your old homework papers to practice for the quiz tomorrow.  Come in well rested and prepared to show your best work!

Ratios

Today we began working with ratios.  We know that a ratio is a comparison of two values set up in one of three ways.

A Fraction...  2/10 or 1/5 shows the ratio of my thumbs to the digits on my hand

Using the word "to"...  The ratio of core classes to related arts classes is 4 core classes to 3 related arts classes

Using a colon...  The ratio of years I was a student at Brown to the years I have been a teacher at Brown is 3:11

Want to know a little bit more about ratios?  Check out this short tutorial on Math.com or this Purplemath.com information.

Your only homework is to get ready for the trip tomorrow.  Remember to bring a lunch, dress in older clothes, bring some mucking around boots and remember to bring in any forms that you didn't get in today!

Ratio

The internet was down for most of yesterday at school, so I couldn't post the homework!  Sorry!!!

Tonight's assignment is to complete worksheet 10-1 at the back of the ratio packet.  Best of luck!
