And the winner is...
More details to come tomorrow. Tonight's homework is to complete the "Statistical Analysis" work sheet. You need to determine if a question is a statistical question and then write three of your own.
Some examples of statistical questions:
- How many pairs of sneakers do students on team 6-2 own?
- What color of the rainbow is the favorite among 5th graders?
- How many months until Sophomores can start driving?
- What sport is the favorite among students in Miss K's homeroom?

Statistics Introduction
What are Statistics and why do we study them?
Eric Newburger from the US Census Department explains why they are useful:
Today we learned about Tally Charts, Frequency Charts and Line Plots. We made foldables in class to help us remember each of these types of ways to collect and share data. If you were absent or lost your, please see me about getting a foldable.
Tonight's homework has two parts. #1 Please complete both sides of the worksheet (1-1 and 1-4) this evening. #2 Please get the yellow paper signed for permission to participate in the taste test tomorrow! If you can't find yours or were absent, please print it out from below!
Thanks and get those taste buds ready for tomorrow!

Minute to Win It!
I hope that everyone enjoyed class today! I know that I had a blast!
Here are the results!
In the Cup Stack, Red and White Class had the high score with 7 cups stacked at the end of a minute!!!!
The Pencil Bounce had four winners that got all 10 pencils in the container! There was a ten in red and green classes and two people got tens in blue class!!!
The pasta pick up had a winner in red class and white class, and they tied with 13 pieces of pasta!
The candy carry was dominated by green class in which one person was able to transfer 19 pieces of candy!
Here's the data below! (Sorry it is a little messy! It was hard to transfer so much data with the colors, etc.)

Tonight's strange homework!
Soooooooooo, in case you hadn't noticed, we missed a whole bunch of school due to the storm! Well, I had planned for you to take a test yesterday and obviously that didn't happen! In order to get out test done before break, I have given you the test in class and am allowing you to work on it at home this evening. Please feel free to use your notes and review posts on the blog to help you. THIS WILL NOT COUNT AS A FULL TEST, rather as a graded assignment/quiz. I will be able to decide once I have a better understanding of how it goes for everyone!
As you know from our discussion in class, I fully acknowledge that I was not able to teach you about Histograms prior to giving out the test, yet they are on the assignment. As I said in class, I want you to do your best on that question, using the notes, examples and information that I provide in this post. I will also give you a few minutes in class tomorrow to further review the concept of a Histogram. I will very likely give partial credit and/or reduce the points on that question so that it is fair. To be totally honest, I want to see how everyone handles the problem before I decide. For example, if everyone does really well on it, I don't want it to be worth less. Once again, I am going to play it by ear and let you know!
And now, on to Histograms...

Histograms
A Histogram is a graphical display of data using bars of different heights.
|
And you decide what ranges to use!
|
Example: Dress Shop Survey
You asked customers who bought one of the "Aurora" range of skirts how old they were.
The ages were from 5 to 25 years old.
You decide to put the results into groups of 5:
- The 1 to 5 years old range,
- The 6 to 10 years old range,
- etc...
So when someone says "I am 17"
you add 1 to the "16-20" range.
And here is the result:
You can see (for example) that there were 30 customers between 6 and 10 years old
|
Histograms are a great way to show results of continuous data, such as:
- weight
- height
- how much time
- etc.
But if your data is in categories (such as Country or Favorite Movie), then you should use a Bar Chart.

How to make a Histogram:
A Histogram Problem:
See you tomorrow! We'll spend some time in class tomorrow going over the Histograms and finishing everything up, but please finish the test tonight so we just need to do a quick review and check over in class tomorrow!
