Beginning to solve Proportions

We began to play with solving proportions today.  We identified and justified what proportions do and do not work and then created our own proportions with pictures.  If you did not finish during class, please complete your proportion pictures for tomorrow.  Examples below.

Proportion Pictures:

Include the scenario, the proportion and a picture that represents part or all of the proportion.

Unit Rate

We began working on Unit Rate in class today. We reviewed our notes and worked on some example problems.

Tonight's homework is to complete the first 5 problems on the word problems side and the first 8 problems on the Unit Rate side. We completed the first on each in class today.

Tomorrow we will spend some time completing other Unit Rate problems and looking for real life comparisons.

Proportion Practice Please!

We created and solved proportions in class today!  Here are some examples from in class and then the rest of tonight's homework (#'s 5-9)  We'll continue to go over writing and solving proportions again tomorrow, so if it's kinda difficult, don't stress, try the problem and we'll go over it tomorrow!

Solving Proportions

We began solving proportions today in class. Our skills from working with ratios and equivalent fractions were really helpful as we explored various techniques for solving proportions.

Starting to use proportions

The shortest definition I can think of for a proportion is this:

Two equal fractions.

Some basics from Math.com and Mathisfun:

We spent today comparing fractions to see if they form equal proportions.  If they both simplify to the same value or you can change one number into the other, they are proportionate.  Here are some examples from class today:
