Metric System Blog Homework!

Hey everyone! If you are reading this, you have just started tonight's online homework! Your homework for tonight is to be on the blog and complete the tasks outlined in this post.

We're starting to work on the Metric System in class. Please follow the directions below to be prepared for class tomorrow!

Size Comparison: Find approximate sizes of the base units in the Metric System. About how long is a meter? How heavy is a gram? How much is a liter?

Wintery Weekend and pajama day!

I hope that everyone enjoyed the scavenger hunt in class today!  It was fun to have everyone running all around the room and chatting, but still doing some great math work!  I hope that you guys have a fun and safe weekend enjoying the snow!  Homework is to study for the test on Tuesday.  You have tons of stuff to study from, so make sure that you are doing everything you can to do your best on the test!

My 1000th post and John Lennon's Birthday!

I am so excited to post my 1000th post on this blog!  I started back in November 2009, so it's taken me three years to get here, but here I am!  I want to send out many thanks to all of the students that have read my blog and participated in the learning that goes on on the blog!  I love that people all over the world have visited my page!  My next milestone is hitting 100,000 page views!  I'm close to 98,000 right now, so it should be right around the corner!

Now on to something else:

Today is John Lennon's birthday.  He would have been 72 years old today.  John Lennon was one of the members of the music group, The Beatles.  Though he is famous for much of his work, activism and personality, he is probably most known for writing the song Imagine.  The lyrics are posted below.

Divisibility and Prime and Composite numbers

We spent a little time working on more divisibility rules and I introduced the rules for 6 and 9 for a bit of a challenge/extension.

6:  A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3.

9:  A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.

After that, we started talking about Prime and Composite numbers.

Perseverance!

We really accomplished a lot in class today.

First we completed a mad minute!  30 multiplication problems in just 60 seconds!  I was pleased with everyone's efforts!  We will do a few more of these over the next week or so.  You can practice your multiplication facts if you want to improve your score...  Here's a fun game to help you practice.

We played a dice game and began talking about perseverance.  Though the game was totally confusing when we first started, 10-15 minutes later, everyone knew how to play!  These were some of the things that you thought of when we talked about perseverance:

• Following your dreams
• Facing Fears
• Never giving up
• Not letting "I can't" be part of your vocabulary
• Keep trying even if you are frustrated
• Just because something is difficult or hard doesn't mean you should stop trying
• If you try to do something, you can do it
• Believe in yourself
• Determination and leadership help you do something fearless
• Keep on trying
• Don't compare yourself to other people
• Challenges are opportunities
• Never say never
• Push on through, keep moving forward
• Don't worry about what other people tell you about what you can't do
• Believe that you can do the impossible

• Use your challenges to help motivate others
• If at first you don't succeed, try again
• Be invincible
• Keep reaching for your goals
• Nothing is impossible, anything is possible

Thinking about perseverance and getting creative in math reminded me of this video about the Makey Makey...  

It's pretty amazing what people can do when they put their minds to it!  I can't wait to see the amazing things you do this year when you persevere and remember that a Positive Attitude + Work = Success!
