Word problem review today!

Great job on the word problems today in class!  As I mentioned, you should use that worksheet to help you prepare for the test.  The word problems on the test will be similar to the ones that you saw today.

As you worked on the study guide, I noticed that some people were having some difficulty with estimation.  To help, please review below and/or visit my original post on estimation.

Adding and Subtracting:  Estimate by round each number to the highest COMMON place value.  Basically round both numbers to the biggest place value that they BOTH have.

ex:  17.92 + 182.034
since both numbers have a digit in the tens place (underlined), we would round to the tens.

20 + 180 = 200

Multiplying:  Estimate by rounding EACH number to its OWN highest place value.  Basically, use as many zeros as possible!

ex:  5.67 x 41.08376
round the first number to the ones place and the second number to the tens place

6 x 40 = 240

Dividing:  Estimate by using compatible numbers.  Round the divisor first and then search for a compatible number for the dividend.

ex:  41.03 / 7.15
round the 7.15 to 7 and then think about multiples of 7.  Since 42 is a multiple of 7 and is reasonably close to 41.03, we round it to 42.

42 / 7 = 6

I'd also encourage you to practice rounding decimal values.  Check out this game to practice.  Or this one!

More 11/11/11

11th November 2011

Come 11 seconds, 11 minutes and 11 hours into tomorrow and clocks (digital, of course) will tick their way through a palindrome - 11:11 on 11/11/11.

For the majority of people in Britain, our thoughts will be of Remembrance Day as we observe a minute’s silence on this most individual of November 11ths.

But here are 11 more facts you need to know about 11/11/11:

1) November 11 is the 315th day of the year.

2) There are 50 days remaining until the end of the year.

3) As well as Remembrance Day, the date 11/11/11 is also known as Independence Day in Poland, commemorating the anniversary of the country's assumption of independent statehood in 1918.

4) In China, November 11th is Singles Day - literally translating as "bare sticks holiday", a Hallmark holiday for people living the single life.

5) In Japan however, November 11th is even more gimmicked, known as Pocky Day and Pretz Day. 'Pocky' is a biscuit stick coated with chocolate named after the sound made when it is bitten, while 'Pretz' is also stick-shaped and similar to a pretzel.

6) Notable births on November 11th include: novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821), actor Robert Ryan (1909), actor Stanley Tucci (1960), actress Demi Moore (1962), actress Calista Flockhart (1964), Leonardo DiCaprio (1974) and reality TV star Chanelle Hayes (1987).

7) Conversely, those having a very bad day indeed include Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1855), Australian outlaw Ned Kelly (1880) and Palestinian leader and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize Yasser Arafat (2004), who all died on November 11th.

8) The General Synod of the Church of England voted to allow women to become priests on November 11th in 1992.

9) On November 11th in 1999, Parliamentary history was made as the House of Lords Act was given Royal Assent, restricting membership of the British House of Lords by virtue of a hereditary peerage.

10) A rough day for those that suffer from aibohphobia, though. As the jokey term for the irrational fear of palindromes, the word itself is of course a palindrome.

11) Fanciful Spinal Tap fans have launched a campaign for the day to be recognised as Nigel Tufnel Day, in tribute to comedy film’s lead guitarist who cluelessly – and hilariously – boasted about his amp’s capacity to ‘go up to eleven’.

Today is probably the last binary day of our lifetimes...

Today is of course Veterans Day in the U.S. (and Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, and Poppy Day in various other parts of the world). And we’re not forgetting that — we’ll have a post up later this morning honoring our veterans.

But today is also what’s called a “binary day,” because if you write today’s date without the century it’s 11/11/11. As there’s no digit greater than 1 there, it qualifies as binary, you see. It is, in fact — assuming you were born before 2000 and after this date in 1911 — the 36th binary day you’ve seen, as there have now been nine each in 2000, 2001, 2010, and 2011. And the odds are pretty good it’s also the last binary day you’ll ever see, because the next one won’t be along until January 1st, 2100 — 88 years and 51 days from now.

Your kids have a decent shot at making it till then, though, so they’ve got something to look forward to in their old age — because you know that if they’re geeks, they’ll think it’s cool that it’s another binary day in addition to the mundane fact that it’ll be the start of the 22nd century.

 This weekend, you should complete the last multiplying worksheet in the packet if you were unable to complete it during class.  Blue class, it will be a single sheet.  :)

Multiplying decimals!

Tonight's homework is to complete the ten questions on the worksheet in the middle of your packet.  (Blue Class has a plain sheet, not part of a packet)  Show your work in the boxes, count the spaces after the decimal in the problem and make sure that your answer has the same amount of spaces after the decimal.

Homework:  Worksheet 3-6.  You must do 25 out of 30 problems, and the two word problems must be part of your 25.

Class:  Congratulations on those of you who got the challenge question correct today!  I gave away a ton of stickers!  Awesome job!  That wasn't an easy problem!  We'll do something like that again on Friday.

Green Class:  The crazy pics will be up later.

Grades:  The pop quiz scores have been entered into the gradebook.  Be sure to check out your score soon.  We will probably have one more test (on decimals) and maybe a quiz before the trimester ends.  Be sure to always get your homework done on time and study for assessments if you want to improve your score.

Professional Development!

Hey kiddos!  I am sitting in a training session on how to use technology in the classroom.  I am looking forward to learning new stuff to make class more exciting and fun!  I hope that you are all enjoying your day off and that you encourage your parents to go vote.  For the first time in my life, I actually voted in the morning!  That time change sure helped!

Pop Quiz tomorrow?

Now, normal teachers don't tell their students when they will be taking a pop quiz, but I'm pretty sure that you have learned that I am NOT a normal teacher...

Tomorrow we will have a small, in-class, graded assignment (basically a pop quiz) on our decimal topics so far.

You should know how to...

*write a decimal in word form and vice versa:

ex:  four and twenty-two thousandths = 4.022  OR 12.07 = twelve and seven hundredths

*Shade in a 10ths or 100ths grid to represent or read a decimal:

ex:  =0.74

*estimate with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

exs: 

For addition and subtraction, round the numbers to the highest common place value.

ex:  24.67 + 8.04  (the ones place is the highest common place value)

         25   +   8  = 33

For multiplication, round EACH number to it's own highest place value.

ex:  213.94 x  7.04

         200   x   7  = 1400

For division, round the DIVISOR first and then find a compatible number for the dividend.

ex:  55.827 / 8.09

       56 / 8 = 7 

*Round decimal values to a given place value.

ex:  14.567 = 14.6  or 254.839 (hundredths) = 254.84

*Compare decimal values.

ex:  12.5 > 12.49  or 0.354 < 0.4

*Put decimal values in order.

Line up the decimals, annex zeros as needed and compare.

You should complete the review worksheet for homework tonight.  (correction on number one- Only the 4 should be underlined)  Study for the pop quiz tomorrow and don't forget to act surprised when I tell you about it tomorrow.  :)
