I swam in this stuff once before!

From the Daily What:  Lights Out: Surfers generate beautiful bioluminescent waves off the coast of San Diego by disturbing a bloom of warmwater phytoplankton Lingulodinium polyedrum, causing a chemical reaction which produces a flash of blue light.

Though red tide can be harmful in certain circumstances, this particular algal bloom has a low-level toxicity that is safe to swim in.

GCF

Greatest Common Factor.  Today we learned about determining the GCF by listing factors and using prime factorization.  Here are some of the notes from class today.




There is more than one way to get the prime factorization of a number, but the answer will always be the same.

Here's the solution of the first problem on tonight's homework:
By finding the prime factorizations of each number, we can compare what they have in common and use those common values to determine the GCF.  In this case, each value has two 3's in it's prime factorization so 9 (3X3) is the greatest common factor.

Tonight's homework is to complete the GCF worksheet.  There are six problems on the paper and we already did #1 in class (see picture above).  You will be able to skip EITHER #4 or #6 if you would like.  If you would prefer to do all problems (that's awesome) you can do both #4 and #6 in addition to the regular ones.  If you do all six problems and get one wrong, it can still go in the 100's box!  There must be 5 correct problems on your paper to go into the 100 box!

Converting between fractions and decimals



Hey everyone!  As you know, I will not be in school on Friday for Rosh Hashanah so I hope that class goes well and you do your best work with the sub.  You will correct the homework from today and work on a class assignment during the period.  If you finish early, there should be a challenge problem for you!

In class today, we began looking at converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals.  I was going to type out a big long informational post, but I found two great pages on mathisfun.com that covers everything.  If you have questions, click the links below.

These links should be a big help!  Fractions should always be in lowest terms when possible.  Remember that when you divide a fraction to turn it into a decimal, the NUMERATOR goes inside the house and the DENOMINATOR is on the outside.  Be on the lookout for repeating decimals and use bar notation when you find one.  Otherwise it should be Terminating.

Tonight's homework is the LCM worksheet.  Remember that you don't have to do the notes side and to read the directions along the side of the paper.  You MUST do #1-8 and 53 and 54.  Choose at least 10 problems on numbers 9-52.

Comparing and ordering fractions

Today we began working with comparing and ordering fractions.  When we compare or order fractions, we can take three approaches.

The first is using logic.  Sometimes you can use common sense to figure things out.  For example if one number is bigger than a half and the other is larger than a half, you don't really have to any calculations.

The second method is probably my favorite.  If we cross multiply going "up on a diagonal" we can easily compare fractions.


Finally the last method is finding common denominators and then comparing the fractions.

Though all of these videos show using Least Common Denominators (LCD) in addition and subtraction problems, the process is the same.

Tonight's homework is to complete the comparing and ordering fractions worksheet.  Remember that you only do the side with the practice problems, #'s 1-22.

First Quiz Tomorrow.

Hey everyone!  As you know, we have the first quiz of the year tomorrow!  I want to make sure that you are as successful as you can be, so be sure to study this evening!!!

 Circle 1/3 of the ice cream cones, or 2/7.
Practice Probability...

Make up your own probability problems using the items from my junk drawer.  Combine them to make it more challenging.  Be sure to simplify!
 Practice working with ratio...

Use these items to make up ratio problems.  Again, be sure to simplify your answers.


You have your study guide as well as your old homework papers to practice for the quiz tomorrow.  Come in well rested and prepared to show your best work!

Perfecting percent!

I am 100% sure that I had fun in class today and I hope that you found at least 80% of class enjoyable.

We started looking at percents today.  I love percents because they often mean that I get to go shopping!!!

We also use percents for grades, surveys and discussing time!
