Patterns

Happy Thursday to my wonderful new students!  So we started learning about patterns today...  I am sure that you have seen patterns in school and in real life many, many times before, but we get to explore patterns again!

We have seen numerical patterns:

like this simple one:  2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.....

and this much more difficult one:  5, 9, 17, 33, 65.....  (By the way, if you think you know the pattern, leave the "rule" in the comment section!)

We have also seen visual patterns:

As you know, your homework tonight is to go on a pattern hunt!

1)  Find a pattern and bring it in.  This should be something that you can give to me, so your backpack or the bottom of your shoes does not count.  I will return the item if you would like it back.  If you have a photo or image that you want to use, you can email it to me at kahrimanisn@madison.k12.ct.us and I will print it out.  Just remember that I will only be able to print in black and white.

2)  Wear a pattern (or patterns) to school tomorrow.  You can be as simple or as crazy as you would like, but make sure you have at least one pattern on.  Here is an example from last year!

"Me" Infographic

Hey everyone!

I hope to see a few more hit on the blog today!  I hope that you all found this easily enough!  :)

Today in class we were able to make infographics about ourselves.  If you were unable to finish, please finish your infographic for homework.  Here's my example:

Remember that you should include your name in the center.  The top left is some of your "favorites."  Top right is how you feel about math.  Bottom left is your hobbies and interests and the bottom right are things that are special, different or interesting about you!

Letter activity

Questions about the Letter Activity?

“One word, action, or deed can make all the difference!”

Welcome to Team 6-3.  We are really excited to meet all of you and find out a little bit more about each of you.   This is going to be a great year with so many exciting things to learn.

Each member of the team is receiving a letter, and when those letters are combined, they will spell out some words we feel represent what our goals are for this upcoming year.

 Your job is to personalize your assigned letter.  Here are some guidelines:

§  Do NOT cut the letters out.

§  If you color the letters, do not go outside the lines.  We need to be able to identify the letter as we spell out the words.

§  Please take the letter you were given and jazz it up.  Color it, draw pictures on it, add sequins, whatever makes you happy!  You can even use clip art (my favorite!) 

§  If you have any questions, please see your homeroom teacher.

Please bring your completed letter to your homeroom teacher by September 9^th , 2011. 

We are looking forward to seeing your creativity. J

Don't forget to have your parents fill out the paperwork you received during homeroom today!  :)

Welcome to my Blog!

SCHOOL FINALLY STARTED!!!!  Wahoo!

I was really looking forward to the start of school and was bummed that it was delayed because of Irene.  Though it was quite an adventure, I am glad that the storm and the power outage are a thing of the past now!

Welcome to the Blog!!! 

I am really excited that you are here!  I plan to use the blog for posting homework, class help, photographs from class, fun videos, interesting web stuff, infographics and anything else that I find fun and worthwhile.  I plan to do my best to post every day.  If you think of something interesting that you would like to see, just let me know and I will see what I can do.  :)

Now, as you may or may not know, a blog is a "public" place.  Just like school and real life, I expect appropriate behavior, kind and intelligent words and respectful interactions.  You are able to post comments on the blog by selecting the comments link below.  If you do so, you can either post as anonymous and include your name in your comment or input your name.  Whatever you choose, be sure to follow these safety guidelines:

• Only use your first name- If you want to include your last initial, that is fine too
• Do not post phone numbers, addresses or any other personal information
• Only post with your parents' permission
• Check with me is you have any questions or concerns

You will soon receive a permission slip from me asking your parents for permission to post photographs from class.  Once those are returned, I will begin taking photos during class and posting them for you to view!

Fibonacci

Solar Panel Upgrade of the Day: A seventh-grader named Aidan Dwyer, inspired by the patterns of branches on oak trees, created a new arrangement of solar panels that generates 20-50% more energy than a the traditional flat solar array.

Aidan’s solar tree design is based on the Fibonacci sequence, a pattern that’s been observed in many places in nature, including tree branches.

For his trouble, Aidan received a Young Naturalist Award from the American Museum of Natural History, and a provisional patent on his invention.

Aidan Says: "I designed and built my own test model, copying the Fibonacci pattern of an oak tree. I studied my results with the compass tool and figured out the branch angles. The pattern was about 137 degrees and the Fibonacci sequence was 2/5. Then I built a model using this pattern from PVC tubing. In place of leaves, I used PV solar panels hooked up in series that produced up to 1/2 volt, so the peak output of the model was 5 volts. The entire design copied the pattern of an oak tree as closely as possible. ... The Fibonacci tree design performed better than the flat-panel model. The tree design made 20% more electricity and collected 2 1/2 more hours of sunlight during the day. But the most interesting results were in December, when the Sun was at its lowest point in the sky. The tree design made 50% more electricity, and the collection time of sunlight was up to 50% longer!"
