Today was day two of our addition and subtraction with decimals. Everyone seemed to do quite well with our homework last night. I hope that you enjoyed the "Shopping Trip" during class today! I know that the math was kinda difficult, but I was super pleased with everyone's effort and happy to see that some people even got the correct answer after all those calculations.

Homework: Finish the addition and subtraction packet. We will have a quiz on Friday. The study guide is due on Thursday. We will have some time to work on it in class on Wednesday and studying/working on the study guide will be the only homework. :)
So we started working on adding and subtracting decimals today in class. We also watched two videos to help us understand the concepts... Check them out below.

We also talked about another trick to help us remember to put the decimal in our answers... Feel free to "plop" your decimal as you work, but be aware of who is around when you do it! ;)

Homework is to complete worksheet 3-6, but only do 9 addition problems, 9 subtraction problems, and the two word problems. You must show all work on the grided paper that follows the assignment in the packet and please transfer your answers to the original worksheet. Please remember that we are finding the actual answers today, not rounding!
Okay, I admit that I don't understand all of the science behind this, but it seems that some scientists were conducting experiments with water droplets on surface that made the water bounce and slide rather than break apart and just land. Very cool! Check it out!
If you have watched the new in the last 24 hours, or for that matter in the last 69 days, you should be aware of the 33 Chilean miners that were trapped in a mine since August. Last night, just around midnight in Chile, the first miner was rescued. I was able to watch a little bit of the footage last evening and suggest that you take a look yourself. Below is a clip of the second miner emerging full of spirit and excitement! He actually brought up a box of rocks to give as gifts to the people standing by including his wife and the President of Chile. Watch below to see the final stage of his rescue!

So what did the miners have to deal with while they were down there?
They were 33 of them trapped about 2000 feet below the surface. They were there for 69 days and emerged in a capsule about 22 inches wide.

This an interview with some of the Americans that helped with the rescue effort from CNN. Never doubt that mathematics comes in handy and useful. Their knowledge of engineering and complex mathematics is what enabled them to save these lives. Every component of the rescue involved math, science, social studies and language arts. YOU could use your knowledge to save lives some day!!!!

Gon't know who John Lennon was? Here's a little bit of Information...
He was a member of The Beatles and was credited with much of their songwriting along with Paul McCartney.
Who are The Beatles? (okay, first let me catch my breath...)
The Beatles were a rock band that created many, many, many songs together. They were only together for around 10 years, 1960-1970, but are considered one of the most influential bands of all time! (and one of my favorites!!!) In fact, VH1 recently shared the results of the "Top artists of all time" list. The Beatles ranked first on the list. The list was compiled by hundreds of contemporary musicians...
The most famous Beatles performance was the first time that they played The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 2010.

Now back to John Lennon. When the Beatles broke up in 1970, John worked on more independent music. He was a pacifist who worked towards Peace. Tragically, he was killed December 8th, 1980. Thankfully, we still have his music!

So today we spent some time talking about decimals...

Soooooo we learned about saying decimal values out loud and writing decimal values with numbers after reading or hearing them in word form. Tomorrow we will talk about comparing and ordering decimal values.

As you know, we started our CBAS testing today! I hope that you all felt comfortable completing the questions! Just so you know, we will be back in the computer lab again tomorrow!
