Counting to 1000!
I had a great time figuring out how long it would take to count to 1000 with all of you! After doing this activity in all four classes, I can let you know that it will take about 28 minutes to count to 1000.
We saw many creative ways to solve this problem and honestly there is no "right" answer, but 28 minutes seemed to keep coming up in each class! Who would have thought that it would take that long?!?!?!?
Tonight's homework is to complete the double-sided estimation worksheet. Remember that for numbers 1-6 on the front side you just need to round the numbers to the highest common place value and that you should skip #9.

Estimation!
We began to look at estimation today and spent a bit of time working on estimation strategies. Your homework this evening is to complete the estimation worksheet from class. Please use the notes below to help you with your homework.
Estimation with addition and subtraction: Round each number to the Highest COMMON place value. If both number go to the same place value, you can just round them to the highest place value. However, if one number goes to a higher place value, you have to round to the highest place value of the smaller number. ex: 123,456 + 78,012 Both numbers would be rounded to the ten-thousands place. 120,000 + 80,000.
Estimation with multiplication: Round each number to its own highest place value and keep single digits the same. (All the single digits!)
Estimation with division: Round the divisor first (but not if it is a single digit) and find a number that is compatible with the divisor. (pretend that the ~ is a division sign!) ex: 4,812 ~ 7 would change to 4,900 ~ 7 because the 49 works really well with the 7.
I hope that this helps a little bit! And remember not to round the single digits, all the single digits!

Rounding Today
Hey there kiddos!
I hope that you enjoyed class today. In respect to the holiday tomorrow and Friday, I gave you lots of time to complete the mini-review assignment that will be due on Friday. If you are unable to complete the assignment due to the holiday, please let the sub know on Friday. You can turn it in on Monday with no penalty. I will be out on Friday because I will be celebrating Rosh Hashana.
Today's assignment was to complete the mini review worksheet from class. As I mentioned, almost everyone finished the assignment in class, so you shouldn't have much to worry about! I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Be well!

Fire Drill today?!?!?!
That was strange! Those of you that were in LA for Blue class missed the prompt and those of you that were with me during the fire drill didn't get as much time to work on the homework. :( Sorry about that and I know that you will have a bit more to do this evening, but I don't want you to fall behind the other classes. The assignment for tonight is a little big, but it should go relatively quickly! Hopefully it won't use too much brain power! Please complete Worksheet 2-1, all problems; Worksheet 2-2, all problems; Worksheet 2-3, evens only.
You will be working on Reading and writing large numbers on ws 2-1. Quick hint on that page, don't forget three zeros in the millions place on number 11 and #'s 13-16 should have lots of zeros.
Rounding numbers, ws 2-2, should be okay as well. Lots to copy down, but not too much that you need to worry about. Remember that for number twelve, you are using the value you saw from number 11. The number 56,603,451 needs to be rounded to the a) hundreds place (4), b) millions place (6), c) ten-thousands place (0), etc.

Finally, the last paper, 2-3, asks you to put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Please remember that you should only do the even numbered problems!!! The values are written with semicolons (;) separating them, so be careful when you look at them. Quick hint: Write the values out in standard form for numbers 12, 14 and 16. For number 18 you can write out the number or the industry!
(we don't use the chart like this lady did, but the information should help you!)

Reading and Writing Large Numbers Day One
Hello Friends!
As you hopefully remember from class, we completed a pre-test today. It covered our first two topics for the year, number sense and decimals. After we completed the pre-tests, we looked at Reading and Writing Large Numbers. Tonight's homework is to complete the worksheet from class. There are some notes on the front of the page, but I want to give you a little bit more information. :)
A little mini lesson on the topic from Beacon Learning Center.
Really great notes from e-math! This page says that a number can be written in three different ways, but we know a fourth, Number-Word Form. I am pretty sure that they didn't mention this form because it is really only convenient when the number you are using has lots of zeros and resembles a rounded number. For example, 56, 000, 000 work well in number-word form: 56 Million, but 7, 891, 024 doesn't.
Practice writing numbers in word form from FunBrain. Practice writing in standard form from FunBrain.
Fun Game from Toon University. Be sure to select level three and work quickly!!!!
MathCats interactive where you can type in a number in standard form and see how it would be written in word form with the click of a button!
Wanna see some big numbers? I mean, really SEE! The Mega Penny Project has visuals of numbers all the way up to Quintillions!!! The page takes a long time to load, but it is pretty cool once it does!!! :)

I love it when my students are smarter than me!
Update on commenting! Weston M. (supergenius) realized that you can comment by selecting "Name/URL" rather than anonymous and the process seems to be a little bit easier! Just be sure to type in your first name and last initial in the name box when you submit. You can leave the URL box blank.

In class today we were able to do some mad minutes and check out the blog! Hopefully you are all able to find the page easily now! :) I would suggest bookmarking the page so that you can get to it easily. If you need help with bookmarking -> Bookmarking. Any web browser that you use should have a bookmark or "favorites" option, usually represented as a star or a heart.
No Homework this evening! :) However, if you are already on this blog, you might as well check it out for a little while. If you haven't left a comment yet, please leave one! Tomorrow we will start doing some real school work and you should expect some homework. I promise that it won't be too bad!
