A bit more CMT prep!

Hello kiddies and kiddos!

As you know, we are continuing to work on our CMT preparations.  Tonight's homework is to complete Strand 7.  This strand allows us to practice adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying with decimals.  We practice our estimation skills in this section too!  We had about 15-25 minutes during class to begin working and I was pleased to see that so many of you got so close to finishing!!!

We will be working on the packet through the middle of next week.  Since some of your might want to get some work done ahead of time, I want to give you plan plans for the next few days of assignments.  Do with this information what you wish, but I wanted to let you know the plan.

Thursday         Strand 4                               10 pages            43 problems
Friday             Strand 8 and 9B                   7 pages              36 problems

Monday          Strand 9C, 10 and 11           9 pages              33 problems
Tuesday          Strand 9D, 12, 15 and 21     9 pages              38 problems
Wednesday     Review
Thursday         Review
Friday             NONE!  (And fun times begin...  You will see in class, but no math for a few days!)

Please also remember that you need to have your tests and average sheet signed for tomorrow!!!

Keep up the great work!

Back from VACAY!!!

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen!

Today we began working on our monstorous CMT packet.

I know it looks awful, but I promise that I will break it down and it will be manageable!!!

Tonight's homework is Strands 1, 2 & 6

I don't expect it, but if we have an issue with snow tomorrow, please check on the blog to see what the homework is for tomorrow night.  That way we won't fall behind and I won't have to have you do any extra another night.

Thanks!

Statistics Review info!

Mean: The Average. Add up all of the values and divide by the number of values in the data set.
Median: The Middle. Put the numbers in the data set in order and then find the middle value. If there are two, average those two to find the median.

Mode: The Most. The individual value that appears the most often. You can have one mode, more than one mode or no mode.

Range: The Span. The distance from the smallest value to the largest value. You subtract the smallest number from the largest to determine the range.

Stem and Leaf diagram: A way to show a list of data in a small area. Ex:

Line Plot: Values marked on a number line using an X to represent each value. Ex:

Tally Chart/Frequency Chart: A way of collecting and showing data. Ex:

Answers to tonight's homework assignment

Stem and Leaf diagram:

1)
stem        leaves
2             5 7
3             0 3 3
4             0 1 3 4
5             0 0 0
6             0 2

2)  The mode is 50 since there are three 50's.
3)  The median of the data is 42.  The middle is between 41 and 43, so we add the two together and then divide by two to get 42.
4)  The range is 37.  We subtract 25 from 62 to get 37.
5)  The mean of the data is 42.  You get 588 for the grand total when you add the data up and then you divide by 14 to get 42.
6)  When you find the mean, median and mode of the data, the only choice that isn't used is 4.  The mean is 5, the median is 6 and the mode is 7.
other side--->>>
7)  The mode is 12.  You can tell because that is the highest column on the line plot.
8)  The median is also 12.  When you work your way toward the middle, you are left with two 12s, so the median is 12.
9)  The range of the data is 5.  When you subtract 10 from 15, you are left with 5 for the range.
10)  Once again the answer is 12.  The total of all of the data is 144 so when you divide by 12, you get 12 as your answer.
11)  After putting the values in order, 4 is the digit in the middle so the median is 4.
12)  After putting the values in order, you are left with 5 and 6 in the middle.  We add them together and then divide by two to get 5.5 as our median.

I hope that this helps!  If you were able to complete this assignment successfully, be prepared to do well on the test!!!  Good luck!!!

-Miss K  :)

Test tomorrow.

Hello ladies and gents!

After a day off and late start, I understand everyone's concern about Friday's assessment, but I promise you, this will be a very simple test.  As you saw in class today, the test consists of 13 questions.  You will be expected to know how to complete Mean, Median, Mode and Range, be able to interpret and understand a stem and leaf diagram, and be able to construct a line plot, a stem and leaf diagram and a tally/frequency chart.  When the test is distributed tomorrow, I will be sure to provide you with some tips to help you!  Please check out the blog posts from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for more information, like the videos, to help you with the material.  Thanks for all of your hard work this week!

Snow Day Hints

Sooooooo, I told you I would offer some help on today's homework if you checked out the blog.  Get ready for some MAJOR help.  Let others know so that they can get the info too!!!

On the pages with the funky writing for the words Mean, Median, Mode & Range here are the hints:

1)  Grand total of all the values to use for getting the mean: 4188.
Both the median and the mean have decimal answers that go to the tenths place.

2)  This stem and leaf diagram has 12 data points and they add up to a total of 841.
The median goes to one decimal place and the mean has a repeating decimal.  Use the repeating bar.

3)  The line plot data totals up to 33 and the answer to the mean will once again have a repeating decimal.
The digits in the mode and range are both used in the median value (plus a decimal point).

4)  Total of the test scores is 348 and the mean will come out to a whole number.
Our only decimal is in the median.

5)  The total of those four values is 43.77.  Both the mean and median will have a few decimals. (range too)
The order of the values is:  10.5, 10.98, 11.09, 11.2.

The OTHER side of that paper will get less hints, but here we go!

1)  Total of the scores is 42.  Two decimal answers.

2)  Total of the values is 191.  The mean has a repeating decimal.

3)  Those values add up to 2220.  No decimals in the answers.

4)  The mean has a repeating decimal  and the range is larger than the median.

5)  The mean is UGLY!  I got 6 places after the decimal, but your calculator might be different...

The other paper...  (Bowling)

1)  The total is one of the choices.
2)  Same.
3)  Put 'em in order first!
4)  Make sure the answer is reasonable.
5)  Look at ALL of the values.
6)  The answer has a decimal.
7)  Subtract small from big.
8)  Not a decimal.
9)  The answer does not appear in the data set.
10)  Jordan could do this one.
11)  No decimal.
12)  I bet you can do this one in your head!

I hope that these clues help you and that you have enjoyed the snow day.  I am going to post a few photos that I took today.  Mostly of Cami playing in the snow!!!

SNOW DAY!!!!

(ps- check back tomorrow for some free extra homework help!!!  I promise to post it by 3 pm.  Probably earlier!)
Lining up to find median.

Remember...  Average the two values in the middle if you have two leftover!

Stem and Leaf Diagrams and Mean, Median, Mode and Range.

Stem and Leaf Diagrams:  This is a way to show a large group of data in a small concise manner, yet still be able to use the information.  Two examples below.

We also began going over Mean, Median, Mode and Range.  Notes are below.

Straightforward lesson:

Fingers crossed for a Snow Day tomorrow!!!!

Remember:  Tonight's homework is worksheets 1-6, 1-7, and 1-8.  This is due tomorrow, but since we will very likely have a snow day, I also gave you Wednesday night's homework which was The two MMMR worksheets.  The Test will still be this Friday!

Best of luck!  (*Snow*Snow*Snow*)

Starting Statistics

Hello again ladies and gentlemen!  Today we started working with statistics.  Due to really, Really, REALLY tight time constraints before the vacation, we are going to have our test on Statistics on Friday.  Please do know that the test will be very simplified!  It is just 13 questions and it is all on one sheet of paper.

We covered a few topics today...

Properties and Types of Graphs:

Bar Graph

Line Graph

Pictograph

Circle Graph

Misleading Graphs:

This site shows quite a few misleading graphs and explains what makes them misleading...

Tally Charts/ Frequency Charts/Line Plots:

Tally Chart

Frequency Chart (with a tally chart included)

Line Plot

Be sure to complete worksheets 1-1 and 1-4 in your packet for tomorrow!  Have a great night!

A little more Customary Work!

Today we took the opportunity to have a little fun AND do a bit more with the customary system.

Remember...

If we are going from big units to small units, we MULTIPLY because we will need lots of those small units.

If we are going from small units to big units, we DIVIDE because we won't need that many of those large units.

Conversion factors:

12 inches in 1 foot
3 feet in 1 yard, 36 inches in 1 yard
5280 feet in 1 mile, 1760 yards in 1 mile

Five Tomatoes  (5-2-8-0)

16 ounces in 1 pound
2000 pounds in 1 ton

8 fluid ounces in 1 cup
2 cups in 1 pint
2 pints in 1 quart
4 quarts in 1 gallon

Good Luck with the Homework, Converting in the Customary System Worksheet.  Remember that the Test is Friday and the Study guide I handed out today is due Thursday!!!!

Have a good day!

-Miss K  :)
