Misleading graphs

Hey all!  Happy half day!  I'm not sure if I will see you all tomorrow.  (No offense, but I kinda hope I don't see you tomorrow!  hummana, hummana No School!)

Today we talked about misleading graphs:

Tonight's homework is to find and cut out or instagram a pic (or more) of a graph.  Ideally it would be a misleading graph, but any graph will do.  If you instagram your graph, please hashtag it #misskgraphs

Here are some examples I found online, see if you can determine what is wrong with them...

Teeny, tiny Item A, but is it any smaller than Item C?

We were REALLY low in '32 and '33.  But was it practically zero?

Emily is sooooo much better than Hilde, or is she?

Ahhhhh, perspective...

Look below to see why the candy corn graph is bad!

Is the change really that dramatic in this rainfall graph?

(Same graph in figures 7 and 8.  Which one is better?)

I can't wait to see what you find!  (Hopefully on Thursday!)

I hope that you had as much fun as I did at our end of the day surprise!

I also loved doing our funky foldable today!  Let me know if you were unable to finish and need help next week!  We have no school on Monday, but the survey needs to be completed by 8 am Monday.  Click HERE if you still need to do it!

Enjoy the weekend!

Tonight's homework is to complete both sides of the worksheet.  Pictures below and data for each class on the histogram pictured below as well.  Click links in the first sentence if you have any questions on either type of graph.

Data from each class below!

We're working on our next foldable tomorrow!  Lots of cutting, but they should look really cool when we are done!

Still need to do the survey?  Do it HERE!

And the winner is...

More details to come tomorrow.  Tonight's homework is to complete the "Statistical Analysis" work sheet.  You need to determine if a question is a statistical  question and then write three of your own.

Some examples of statistical questions:

  • How many pairs of sneakers do students on team 6-2 own?

  • How many months until Sophomores can start driving?
  • What sport is the favorite among students in Miss K's homeroom?

Statistics Introduction

What are Statistics and why do we study them?

Eric Newburger from the US Census Department explains why they are useful:

Today we learned about Tally Charts, Frequency Charts and Line Plots.  We made foldables in class to help us remember each of these types of ways to collect and share data.  If you were absent or lost your, please see me about getting a foldable.

Tonight's homework has two parts.  #1 Please complete both sides of the worksheet (1-1 and 1-4) this evening.  #2  Please get the yellow paper signed for permission to participate in the taste test tomorrow!  If you can't find yours or were absent, please print it out from below!

Thanks and get those taste buds ready for tomorrow!
