A long first week deserves a long weekend!

We talked about patterns in class today and got to work with both numerical patterns and pictorial patterns.

But first, we played "Regifting Robin."  If you want to show the game to friends or family, just click Robin's face below to be taken to the site.

If you want to practice patterns, there are many games and activities on this site that you can practice!

Homework is to have an AWESOME long weekend!

Perseverance!

We really accomplished a lot in class today.

First we completed a mad minute!  30 multiplication problems in just 60 seconds!  I was pleased with everyone's efforts!  We will do a few more of these over the next week or so.  You can practice your multiplication facts if you want to improve your score...  Here's a fun game to help you practice.

We played a dice game and began talking about perseverance.  Though the game was totally confusing when we first started, 10-15 minutes later, everyone knew how to play!  These were some of the things that you thought of when we talked about perseverance:
I Think I Can // Jill McDonald
  • Following your dreams
  • Facing Fears
  • Never giving up
  • Not letting "I can't" be part of your vocabulary
  • Keep trying even if you are frustrated
  • Just because something is difficult or hard doesn't mean you should stop trying
  • If you try to do something, you can do it
  • Believe in yourself
  • Determination and leadership help you do something fearless
  • Keep on trying
  • Don't compare yourself to other people
  • Challenges are opportunities
  • Never say never
  • Push on through, keep moving forward
  • Don't worry about what other people tell you about what you can't do
  • Believe that you can do the impossible
  • Stay strong and believe in yourself
  • Use your challenges to help motivate others
  • If at first you don't succeed, try again
  • Be invincible
  • Keep reaching for your goals
  • Nothing is impossible, anything is possible
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, your right!!
We also watched a short video on Jessica Cox.  If you want to watch it again or share it with your family, it's posted below.  Her website is rightfooted.com

Thinking about perseverance and getting creative in math reminded me of this video about the Makey Makey...

It's pretty amazing what people can do when they put their minds to it!  I can't wait to see the amazing things you do this year when you persevere and remember that a Positive Attitude + Work = Success!

Tonight's homework is to check out the blog and if you are reading this, you already completed your hw!  If you need to get the other side of your orange sheet signed, please remember to bring it in Thursday!

Getting to know you... Getting to know all about you!

Today we completed mini posters about ourselves!  If you weren't in class, please try to complete the assignment this evening for homework.  My example is below.  You should put your name in the center of your paper, and then divide the background into four sections.

The top left should be some of your favorite things...  food, color, games, teams, whatever you like.

The top right should be how you feel about math.  It's okay to be truthful, but be sure to be kind!

The bottom left is a place to tell me what you like to do in your free time.

The bottom right can be some interesting facts about you.  Cool places you have been, things you have done, special talents or random facts.

Your other homework is to get BOTH SIDES of the orange paper signed.  One side is about class expectations and responsibilities and the other side is photo permission for the blog.  Be sure to bring that in tomorrow!  If you or your parents/guardians have questions about any aspect of the permission slip, please feel free to email me or let me know in class tomorrow.  I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have!

Have a happy Tuesday!

What a Great First Day!!!

Well the first day is just about done!  It was such a pleasure getting to know a little bit about each of you today!  I found out some really interesting and strange things about many of you!  You can do some funky, strange stuff, have broken lots of random bones in very random manners, eaten lots of strange food, and been all over the world!  I can't wait to learn more about you as students and people!  It's going to be a wonderful, fun year and I am very excited about working with you this year!

When you come to class each day, please be sure to come with a positive attitude, a willingness to work and try, and a pencil!  Together we are going to accomplish a great deal of learning, living, and levity!

Tonight's homework for the team is to have your parents complete the paperwork in the tan folder that you got in homeroom!  This is the best homework of the school year, because it's the one time you aren't the one that is supposed to do the work!  :)

Thanks again for a wonderful first day!  I can't wait to spend the rest of the year working with you!

Best of luck to my former students and I can't wait to meet my new students!  Enjoy your last week of vacation!
